We Are Here for You This Winter
There is something about the changing of the season that stays with us here at the pharmacy. The mornings get darker, the familiar faces come in with heavier coats, and almost without fail, the first coughs and sniffles begin to appear. We have looked after this community through many winters now, and we know how much it takes out of people — the worry, the tiredness, the not quite knowing whether you should push through or ask for help.
We want you to know that you do not have to figure it out alone. Whether you are trying to stay well before winter arrives, or you are already in the thick of it and need someone to talk to, we are right here. This post is our way of sharing what we think you need to know this season, from your pharmacy team to you.
The Best Thing You Can Do Right Now: Get Vaccinated
We say this with real conviction, because we genuinely believe it. Flu is not just a bad cold. For many people — particularly those who are older, pregnant, or living with a health condition — it can be serious, exhausting, and frightening. Getting vaccinated before the season peaks is the single most effective way to protect yourself and the people you care about.
It takes just a few minutes, right here in our pharmacy. No GP appointment, no waiting weeks. For the 2026/27 season, the NHS flu jab is free if you are aged 65 or over, pregnant, have a long-term health condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, or if you care for someone vulnerable. If you are not in an eligible group, our private flu vaccination is quick and very affordable. Please do not let eligibility stop you from asking us.

For COVID, the NHS autumn booster is available for adults aged 75 and over, and for those who are immunocompromised, including people living with cancer or those receiving immunosuppressive treatments. If this is you, please do not put it off — the protection from previous doses does fade, and this season's vaccine has been updated for the strains currently in circulation. If you are not eligible on the NHS, we offer a private COVID vaccination too, because we believe everyone who wants protection should be able to get it.

Getting vaccinated is one of the kindest things you can do — for yourself, and for the people around you.
Got a Sore Throat or Sinusitis? Please Come and See Us
We want to say this as clearly as we can: you do not need to struggle on alone, and you do not need to wait weeks to see a GP for a sore throat or sinusitis. We know how demoralising it feels to wake up on day three still unwell, not sure whether it is getting better or worse, and unsure where to turn.
Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess you properly and, where clinically appropriate and subject to eligibility, prescribe treatment for you the same day. You are welcome to simply walk in, or book an appointment on our website if you would prefer. Standard NHS prescription charges apply where relevant. We would rather you came in and we told you everything was fine than had you worrying at home unnecessarily.

Looking After Yourself Every Day: Immune Support That Is Worth Knowing About
Vaccination gives you a powerful layer of protection, but what you do every day matters too. Your immune system needs the right fuel to do its job well, and through the winter months, most of us are running lower on certain key nutrients than we realise. We get asked about supplements a lot at the counter, so here is our honest, considered view on what is genuinely worth considering this season.
Vitamin D ☀️
This is the one with the strongest evidence behind it, and the one we would recommend above all others for the winter months. By October, most people in the UK have depleted vitamin D stores because our bodies simply cannot produce it without adequate sunlight. Good research shows that keeping your vitamin D levels topped up helps reduce the risk of respiratory infections, particularly if your levels have already dropped low. The NHS recommends that all adults supplement throughout autumn and winter. If you are not already taking it, this is the one to start with. Come and ask us about the right dose for you, as individual needs do vary.
Zinc 🛡️
Zinc is essential for the development and function of your immune cells, and mild deficiency is more common than most people realise, particularly in older adults. The research is most compelling for zinc taken at the very start of a cold — studies have found it can meaningfully shorten how long you feel unwell when taken within the first 24 hours of symptoms. Taking a daily supplement through winter is also a sensible way to keep your levels steady, especially if your diet is not particularly rich in red meat, shellfish or legumes. Ask us what would work best for you.
Probiotics 🦠
A large proportion of your immune system lives in your gut, and the link between gut health and immune function is one of the most exciting areas of health research right now. Studies suggest that a good daily probiotic may help reduce the frequency of colds and respiratory infections, though not all probiotics are equal — the strains used really do matter. A well-chosen, multi-strain probiotic taken daily through winter is a worthwhile addition to your routine. We stock a range of well-researched products in the pharmacy and are happy to help you find the right one.
Vitamin C 🍊
We want to be honest with you about this one. The research shows that vitamin C does not reliably prevent colds in most people, and we would never want to oversell it. Where it does seem to help is in shortening how long a cold lasts, and it may offer a little more protection for people who are physically run down, under a lot of stress, or not eating many fresh fruits and vegetables. If any of that sounds familiar, it is a simple and affordable supplement worth adding through the winter months. Just do not expect it to be a magic shield.
Echinacea 🌿
Echinacea has been used for generations to support the immune system through cold and flu season, and while the research is genuinely promising, it is also quite mixed. Some studies suggest it may help reduce the risk and duration of upper respiratory infections, but results really do depend on the specific product and preparation. We tend to recommend it at the very first sign of symptoms rather than as a daily supplement throughout winter. If you are thinking about trying it, come and have a chat with us first so we can point you towards something with a solid track record.
We know there is a lot to take in, and choosing supplements can feel overwhelming when the shelves are full of options promising the world. Please just come and talk to us. We will never push you towards something you do not need. We will look at what you are already taking, think about your circumstances, and give you an honest answer. That is all we have ever wanted to do.
From All of Us at Saxmundham Pharmacy: We Are Here
We think about our patients a great deal, especially as the colder months arrive. We think about the older gentleman who comes in every Tuesday. The young mum juggling everything. The person who has been putting off that vaccination because life has been so busy. We think about how much it means to have somewhere local to turn — somewhere you are known, where someone will take the time to listen.
That is what we are here for. Not just to dispense medication, but to be a genuine part of your care. To answer the question you were not sure was worth asking. To notice when something seems off. To be the place you think of first when you are not quite sure what to do.
This winter, please lean on us. We are here, we are glad you came in, and we will always do our very best for you.
